Is Gastric Surgery The Answer?

July 5th, 2008 -- Posted in Weight Loss and Diets | No Comments »
I understand weight is an emotional issue, but when I see clips like the following I do tend to get frustrated.

You see i picked up on several things on this video, First of all well done to the guy involved for getting some exercise into his life for that is a positive start.

But other than that this all falls apart because it is addressing the wrong issues.

You will see a section where he mentions about living on borrowed time, now it might just be me but it is said so matter of fact, probably because deep down he is saying it out loud but not admitting it to himself.

Also this gentleman ends out having gastric surgery - and the key part to this as you will hear in the video is that IF HE DOES NOT CHANGE HIS LIFESTYLE, HE COULD STAY THE SAME WEIGHT OR EVEN GAIN.

Gosh that is so important, and it is also why he should not be having this surgery, because quite simply if you cannot commit to lifestyle changes and react to the fact that you know you are living on borrowed time, then this kind of surgery is an easy way out AND the chances are you will not change your lifestyloe anyway.

I know I’m ranting but it is there for all to see, and it’s not just weight it is any change in life that you are after, stop trying to seek the easy way out, admit you are where you are because of your choices, change because you want to do it for you and NOT for anyone else, do some research on a plan you would like to follow, and then stick to it and you will start to see the results you want.

Rant over, have a great Saturday

Depressing Weight Loss

July 3rd, 2008 -- Posted in Weight Loss and Diets | No Comments »

The world we live in is MAD

You would think that governments would want doctors to be encouraging people to take up a healthy lifestyle, but no they allow them to use drugs like the ones you will see in the clip below.

But the real mad thing about all of this is that these drugs will have to be taken for a lifetime OR the person taken them is just going to yo-yo and get more depressed and probably more obese.

The Weight Loss Benefit of Green Tea

June 30th, 2008 -- Posted in Weight Loss and Diets | No Comments »

Great post this that I found today about green tea. I am a big fan of this and have a personal favourite which I have used for 10 years or so now. And, not only do I think green tea helps with weight loss, but I also think it can assist with a great many other ailments.

Enjoy

For 4,000 years, Asians have regarded green tea as something more than just a beverage. Green tea was used as herbal medicine and treatment for everything from headaches to depressions and even to weight loss.

Researches have been conducted over the last few years to identify what compound present in green tea makes it a potent health drink. The scientists have found that green tea contains several antioxidants which are responsible for many of green tea’s health benefits, including weight loss benefit.

A research study by American and Swiss scientists on the weight loss benefit of green tea was concluded and the results of which were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and Urology. During the course of their study, they have found that green tea contains certain compounds that contribute to its weight loss benefit.

Lead researcher, D. Abdul Dulloo said in a press release that there are only two ways to achieve weight loss – either reduce energy intake or increase energy expenditure. Green tea, it seems, has compounds that can increase the body’s normal metabolism rate, thus giving it its weight loss benefit.

At the University of Geneva, where the study was conducted, Dr. Dulloo and his colleagues experimented on ten healthy young men. They theorized that the main contributor to green tea’s weight loss benefit is its caffeine content. To test this hypothesis on green tea’s weight loss benefit, they placed the study’s participants on a typical “Western” diet which is about forty percent fat, thirteen percent protein, and forty-seven percent carbohydrates.

Thrice everyday, the researchers measured their subjects’ energy expenditure (the measurement used in determining the number of calories burned in 24 hours) and monitored their respiration quotient to find out how well they utilized their carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

When they interpreted the data they collected, they found out that the men receiving regular dosages of green tea extract showed a significant increase in their 24-hour energy expenditure and a reduction in their respiration quotient (which means that more fat is burned, thereby achieving maximum weight loss). On the other hand, those men who were only given caffeine or placebo with every meal showed only minimal increases in their metabolism rates.

The scientists construed that the substance catechin polyphenol present in green tea adds to its weight loss benefit. These substances in green tea may alter how the body uses the hormone norepinephrine which is responsible for increasing the metabolism rate, thus leading to weight loss.

In their conclusion, the scientists inferred that green tea owes its weight loss benefit to the presence of antioxidants and the substance catechin polyphenol. These substances help increase fat and calorie burning and optimize weight loss.

Why You Are Fat And Tired

June 19th, 2008 -- Posted in Weight Loss and Diets | 1 Comment »

Woah, if that title doesn’t grab you then you obviously are in great health or just don’t care.

But I tell you what I saw that title on someone elses blog and it got me straight away because it is all about spotting the symptoms of Thyroid dysfunction.

Now thyroid is a subject close to my heart as my wife has an under active thyroid gland, and to be honest when she first went to see a doctor about it his response was pretty crap actually. He wanted to blame her overeating and not exercising, but we knew this wasn’t true.

Fortunately (or unfortunately I’m not sure which), there was some other health issues which started to develop and it was diagnosed and she has been on thyroxine ever since.

I’ll do some more stuff on the thyroid over the next few weeks, as even when people get on thyroxin they can still struggle with their weight, so we’ll share with you what we have learnt.

In the meantime, check out this post by Dr Best it is extremely good

Worms And Parasites - Getting Rid Of Them

June 17th, 2008 -- Posted in Weight Loss and Diets | No Comments »

I was putting together the weight loss review site the other day, and one of the books I was reviewing was about parasites living in humans (you can view that book here if you want.)

It was something that I thought was really just a problem in 3rd world countries, but apparently it is rife across the US and Europe as well.

Anyway I am going to do some more research into it, but in the meantime I came across this article which I thought was quite informative, so I thought I would share it with you.

Are You Being Eaten Alive From The Inside Out?

THE PROBLEM:

Dr. James Balch M.D., and Phyllis A. Balch, CNC note : “Worm infestations can range from mild to severe, even life threatening, particularly in children. They result in poor absorption of essential nutrients, and in some cases, loss of blood from the gastrointestinal tract…Malabsorption resulting from parasitic infection makes one susceptible to many diseases because it results in

Diminished immune function…Parasites are more common than most people suppose and they can be behind many illnesses, including colon disorders… They… are common in people with AIDS chronic fatigue syndrome, candidiasis, and many other disorders. There are some very helpful foods as well as herbs for worm infestation.

Natural Remedies

Aloe Vera taken in any form is very effective in eliminating worms.
Other herbs that help expel worms are cascara sagrada, wormwood, cloves, Echinacea, goldenseal, burdock, and black walnut to name a few.
Grapefruit seed extract is also helpful in destroying parasites. According to the, Natural Remedies Encyclopedia, one can “Take black walnut extract and chaparral tea or tablets, eat pumpkin seeds and figs. Also drink fig juice…A hot-water enema, with 3 tsp.of salt to a quart of water, may get rid of pinworms…The Japanese use ginger to get rid of worms. Research has shown this to be true.

One notable solution is Diatomaceous Earth. By taking these capsules for three weeks, you can rid yourself of worms. The worms eat it and it causes them to disintegrate.

Garlic has been used effectively for pinworms, roundworms, giardia (an amoeba), as well as other parasitic infections.

Finally according to Dr. Huldah Clark, N.D., “Getting rid of all parasites would be absolutely impossible using clinical medicines that can kill only one or two parasites each. Such medicines also tend to make you quite ill. Imagine taking 10 such drugs to kill a dozen of your parasites! Good news, perhaps, for the drug makers but not for you. Yet three herbs can rid you of over 100 types of parasites! And without so much as a headache! Without nausea! Without any interference with any drug that you are already on! Does this sound too fantastic? Just too good to be true? They are nature’s gift to us.

The herbs are: Black Walnut Hulls (from the black walnut tree)

Wormwood (from the Artemisia shrub)

Common Cloves (from the clove tree)

These three herbs must be used together. Black walnut hull and
wormwood kill adults and developmental stages of at least 100 parasites. Cloves kill the eggs. Only if you use them together will you rid yourself of parasites. If you kill only the adults, the tiny stages and eggs will soon grow into new adults. If you kill only the eggs, the million stages already loose in your body will soon grow into adults and make more eggs. They must be used together as a single treatment.”

Remember the foods that you eat have a large part to play in worm infestation. Even fruits and vegetables that have not been properly washed can lead to worm infestation. Eating meat of any kind almost guarantees parasite infestation.

The original diet given to Mankind in the Garden of Eden is still the optimal diet, and we would do well to follow the pattern given there.: “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.” An addition was added later, after mankind sinned, “thou shalt eat the herb of the field.” Genesis 1:29; 3:18.

Weight Loss Products Reviewed

June 13th, 2008 -- Posted in Weight Loss and Diets | No Comments »

I am knackered! (that’s UK slang for worn out)

I’m no technophobe but then again I don’t call myself a webmaster either I’m kind of somewhere in the middle of it all.

The reason I’m telling you all this is because I’ve spent the day putting together a new page on some of the best weight loss products out there and fighting with html coding is not my strong point, but finally I’ve done it.

There are 5 products I’ve reviewed on the site as different things appeal to different people, but the main things they have in common are they they are all based on eating the right foods and burning up calories, no drugs, fads or anything of the like.

Finally, and just as importantly, all of the products have cast iron money back guarantees, so you really have nothing to lose but the weight.

Anyway the link is below and I am also putting it up on the main page so you can visit it anytime you want.

Healthy Dieting - What Is It?

June 10th, 2008 -- Posted in Weight Loss and Diets | 1 Comment »

Healthy dieting should really be straightforward. After all having a healthy diet simply means having healthy eating habits. However, in todays world of obesity and the search for quick fixes healthy dieting now probably resembles something more along the lines of “How can I lose weight fast and feel as though I am not doing any long term damage to myself?”

Now I know that probably sounds a little harsh, but having previously spent 5 years working with people to help them lose weight, with one on one consultations, the consequences of what people are prepared to do to solve the problem of being overweight now in the shortest time possible regardless is staggering.

First of all lets look at the word diet. My understanding of this word is that your diet is what you eat on a daily basis, so to diet is simply to eat, but it is all about eating the right foods and in the right quantity, and, if you want to lose weight then you need to be burning up more food than you eat.

At this point I have probably lost most of the people reading this, as they would have heard that last line before, but the reason they have heard it before is because it is TRUE. And, surprisingly the people looking for the quick fix or the ones that generally do not want to exercise nor change their eating habits on a permanent basis.

On the whole your body needs a healthy variety of proteins, the right kind of carbohydrates, and essential fats. Now if you lose weight quickly overnight and then go back to eating a diet that does not consist of a balance of the three items listed above, you will sharp regain the lost weight and probably more, and once again be on the cycle of looking for a quick fix.

Whilst it is important to get the balance of your food right through having a balance of the previously mentioned food groups, we then come back to exercise. If you remember the title of this post is healthy dieting, and part of that has to be exercise, not only to produce a calorie deficit , but in fact to keep you healthy, after all even moderate exercise such as brisk walking for half an hour 3 to 5 times a week can bring enormous health benefits. Exercise increases your HDL (good cholesterol) levels, decreases LDL (bad cholesterol) levels and prevents heart diseases. It also improves your health and will drive away fatigue.

Also, try to keep your diet fiber rich by eating more vegetables and fruits-fill up on these foods that are good for you and you will not be inclined to binge on calorie laden junk food. Eat at least 5 servings of fruit and veg a day. These foods are packed with essential fibers, vitamins , and antioxidants. Eating nothing but a few tomato slices and a half cup of cottage cheese a day for eight weeks is certainly a fast way to lose weight , but it’s also terrible for your health. Your body won’t get the nutrients it needs, and then you’ll put it all back on anyway.

I’d love your comments on this subject, so feel free to leave them below

Lose Belly Fat By Eating Whole Grains

May 30th, 2008 -- Posted in Weight Loss and Diets | No Comments »

CAme across this post today and just thought I had to share it.

A diet rich in whole grains may help fight your belly bulge while lowering the risk of heart disease.

A new study shows people who followed a weight loss program incorporating whole-grain breads, cereals, and other foods lost more body fat from the abdominal area than those who ate only refined grains like white bread and rice.

In addition, those on the whole-grain diet experienced a 38% drop in C-reactive protein (CRP), an indicator of inflammation in the body linked to heart disease.

Researchers say the results suggest that incorporating whole grains into weight loss plans may help burn fat as well as reduce the risk of heart disease.

The results appear in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Whole Grains vs. Refined Grains
In the study, Heather I. Katcher of Pennsylvania State University and colleagues divided 50 obese adults with metabolic syndrome into two groups. Metabolic syndrome is a collection of risk factors that increase risk for heart disease and diabetes.

Both groups were instructed to cut calories for 12 weeks. But one group was told to eat only whole-grain products while the other group was asked not to eat any whole-grain foods.

By the end of the study, both groups had lost weight, an average of 8 pounds among the whole-grain group and 11 pounds in the refined-grain group.

Both groups experienced a decrease in body fat, but the whole-grain group lost significantly more body fat from the abdominal region than the refined-grain group. Excessive fat around the midsection is linked to an increased risk of heart disease.

The whole-grain group experienced other benefits. For example, CRP levels dropped by 38% among those who followed a whole-grain diet. No decrease was found among the refined-grain group.

Those in the whole-grain group also increased their intake of dietary fiber and magnesium.

Sources of Whole Grain

Looking for food that is a good source of whole grain? Here are some examples of whole grains:

Whole wheat
Whole oats/oatmeal
Whole-grain corn
Popcorn
Brown rice
Whole rye
Whole-grain barley
Wild rice
Buckwheat
Triticale
Bulgur (cracked wheat)
Millet
Quinoa
Sorghum
You can add whole grains at meals and snacks:

Snack on ready-to-eat, whole-grain cereals such as toasted oat cereal.
Add whole-grain flour or oatmeal when making cookies or other baked treats.
Try a whole-grain snack chip, such as baked tortilla chips.
Popcorn, a whole grain, can be a healthy snack with little or no added salt and butter.
Whole Grains on Food Labels
When trying to select foods with whole grains, choose foods that name one of the following whole-grain ingredients first on the label’s ingredient list:

Brown rice
Bulgur
Oatmeal
Whole-grain corn
Whole oats
Whole rye
Whole wheat
Wild rice
Foods labeled with the words “multi-grain,” “stone-ground,” “100% wheat,” “cracked wheat,” “seven-grain,” or “bran” are usually not whole-grain products.

Color is not an indication of a whole grain. Bread can be brown because of molasses or other added ingredients. Read the ingredient list to see if it is a whole grain. Use the Nutrition Facts label and choose products with a higher % Daily Value (%DV) for fiber. The “%DV” for fiber is a good clue to the amount of whole grain in the product.
