Losing weight is a difficult life long battle for many people. We think of weight loss as a quick fix instead of a lifestyle change. This misunderstanding about the true purpose of weight loss will never lead to permanent results. Choose weight loss for its long-term benefits. The road will be filled with hills and valleys, but simple deliberate actions like these will help on the road ahead.
Lifestyle Change: When you are discouraged after a bad week of no weight loss, remember this is a lifelong change. You have entered into this journey for the rest of your life. This is a pact you have made with yourself and have chosen better health.
Accountable Actions: Find a person attempting to reach similar goals. Keep one another accountable and support one another through everything from junk food cravings to getting through the first few weeks of weight loss. This accountability will help you to put down the cookie and forage ahead.

- Plotting Your Demise: It is normal to crave junk food. Look ahead on your schedule and choose one time during the week when you can eat food outside of your original plan. This will keep your cravings at bay. Eating the correct foods immediately following this planned splurge will help you to understand healthy eating patterns. Ask a thin person if they eat junk food, and their response is likely to be an overwhelming yes. They are able to maintain by eating junk food only once or twice a week.
- Exercise for Stress Relief: Changing the way you are eating is difficult and exercise can be perceived as an insurmountable goal. It is difficult enough to simply stop eating that extra piece of cake. Think of exercise as stress relief for dieting. After regular exercise over the course of a few short weeks, you will feel your body’s urge to go for a brisk walk or lift weights. You will be further motivated in your efforts after noticing how great your body feels after working out.
- Reward Yourself Without Food: When milestones are reached, find a reason to celebrate. We are a culture and society that uses food to celebrate. Find something that is equally exciting. Set a goal of a few pounds, and once you have reached the goal, choose something inexpensive that you have wanted but denied yourself.
This endeavor will go on for the rest of your life. You choose the destination ahead and when to drive on and off the road. Take this journey in several short trips and you will arrive at your ultimate destination. Unlike a real trip, you will continue driving over and over again to a goal of good health.
