Following on from the good food for diabetes article, I thought I would share with you some store cupboard essentials if you have diabetes.
Basically using these kind of products should help you keep your sugar levels at a better level. Also, another resource you may want to check out to help control diabetes more effectively can be found here
- Stock up on low-GI carbohydrates, such as basmati rice, egg noodles, wholemeal pasta, pulses, lentils, new potatoes, sweet potatoes and yam
- Go for muesli, porridge oats or high fibre cereals for breakfast
- Plenty of veg, either fresh, frozen, canned or dried
- Go for lower fat varieties when it comes to milk and dairy products.
Hope that helps, but remember if you have any doubts check them with your doctor first.

Diabetes is probably now becoming one of the fastest growing health concerns in the US an UK.
The reason that it is growing as a health concern so fast is down to the fact that obesity is rising and type 2 diabetes is strongly linked with obesity. And, in my opinion (and that’s all it is) the cause of obesity is down to the fact of the amount of sugar and refined white flour within the diet of most people these days, and these two components both raise glucose levels, and because there is too much in the body to burn off, what is left is then stored as fat.
So what can we do?
Well first of all lets be aware of the warning signs, as a lot of people may have diabetes and not find out about it until too late which can have severe consequences on their health, so look out for
- Extreme thirst
- Urinating Frequently-especially at night
- Tiredness
- Unexplained weight loss
- Blurred vision
Now if you find you are suffering from these symptoms, you must see a medical practitioner as soon as you can.
But, as well as diet being a cause behind diabetes, you can also use your diet to improve diabetes. Try some of the following
- Eat three meals a day to regulate hunger and blood sugar levels
- Always include starchy foods in your diet, and choose wholemeal or wholegrain varieties
- Cut down on saturated fats, such as meat, butter and full fat milk - also use oils such as olive or rapeseed for cooking
- I know it’s boring and we hear it all the time, but get those 5 a day servings of fruit and veg into you.
- Eat more pulses such as beans and lentils. Give them a go in stews soups or salads
- Eat 2 portions of fish a week and make sure one of them is oily. Diabetes is linked to heart disease so the Omega 3 in fish such as salmon or sardines may help fight this.
- Cut back on your salt - no more than 6g a day and make it sea salt not table salt
- Never drink alcohol on an empty stomach as it can lower blood glucose, and try to drink in moderation.
I hope you have found some valuable tidbits in there, however if you really want the low down on how to win the fight against diabetes, you can get a lot more information on the subject by clicking here
