Walking - A Very Effective Way To Get In Shape

July 2nd, 2010 -- Posted in Health and Fitness | No Comments »

Walking is a low impact, low injury risk method of exercising which is a great solution for many people - at a variety of different levels of fitness and over a broad band of ages. There’s no need for any special equipment, training or expertise - and you can slot it into your day whenever it’s most convenient for you. The potential health benefits of walking read like an advert for some new miracle drug - but they are very real and can be obtainaned with no more than a few small changes to your daily routine.

The majority of health professionals recommend a target of 10,000 steps daily in order to obtain the numerous health benefits achievable. That equates to a distance of between four and a half and five miles for most of us. It does sound like quite a long way - but it’s easier to achieve than you might imagine. Bearing in mind the potential health benefits on offer, a little extra effort to fit walking into your day is well worth your while.

It’s quite likely that you may be some way under the recommended 10,000 step level. If you’re not sure how many steps you currently take then it could be a good idea to get hold of an Omron pedometer in order to find out what your daily average is. You can find these at fairly low prices these days - but be sure to pick one which uses a double axis sensor as these are more accurate.

Once you know the average number of steps you take each day, you should seek out ways to make up any shortfall between your daily average and the 10,000 step target value. There are numerous ways to do this - but use a little common sense in the beginning and take it easy - there’s absolutely no need to do everything at once.

If you can fit a dedicated slot for walking into your day then that’s ideal. If that’s not a practical proposition for you then don’t worry - there are plenty of opportunities to raise your step count. Leave the car at home and walk to work, school or the shops. Take the stairs instead of the lift every now and again. Get off the subway one or two stops early and walk the last leg of your journey.

Make modern technology work for you by walking around whenever you talk on your mobile phone. You can fit in an extra 1,000 or 1,500 paces during a fifteen minute phone call. Opportunities to build walking into your daily schedule abound - and small changes soon add up.

One more way to make use of modern technology would be to use the new style of exercise footwear which is specially designed to increase the amount of work the muscles in your lower body muscles perform whilst walking normally. Skechers Shape Ups, Reeboks EasyTones and Fit flops sandals are all examples of this style of exercise shoe.

If you have any medical conditions, if you haven’t taken regular exercise for a while, or if you’re over forty years old then it would be a good idea to talk to your doctor prior to embarking on any new fitness program. However, considering that walking is a low impact workout which carries a very low injury risk, it should provide you with many health benefits. You will feel better, have increased energy levels and be losing weight in no time - and you won’t need a set of scales or a pedometer to tell you how well you’re doing. You will be able to both see and feel the results.

Sculpted Bodies with Pilates Exercise Videos

May 29th, 2010 -- Posted in Health and Fitness | No Comments »

Moms always seem to put the needs of their family far before their personal needs, but it is possible to take care of the ones you love and take care of your own health by doing exercise videos online. Pilates not only can give you a strong, fit body but it can do so without long, tedious, strenuous workouts in a gym. And with summertime right around the corner, you still have time to get toned up in as little as twenty minutes a day.

The man who created Pilates (Joseph Pilates) understood that exercise was more than just moving the body, but it was incorporating breathing exercises along with exercise to create a workout that truly gave the entire body a complete workout. With Pilates, there is no need for big weights or expensive gym equipment because the focus is on strengthening the core – which is your abs, back and butt – and by strengthening this area you are toning the part of the body that supports the entire body. With Pilates, you develop long, lean muscles and a strong, firm abdominal area.

There are six main elements of Pilates: breath, concentration, flow, control, centering and precision. Breath is the most important aspect of Pilates, because breathing promotes circulation and circulation promotes healing and getting stronger. The next more important aspect of any Pilates workout video would be an emphasis on strengthening your middle (or you’re core): By strengthening your core, your entire body benefits. And I’ve never met a mom or a woman who doesn’t dream about having a stronger and more resilient body that will support their busy and crazy life.

Another popular benefit to regular Pilates exercise is that it makes it easier to focus when we are tired after a long day. And lets say it like it really is – moms don’t have time to be stressed out! So if you can concentrate under pressure you are sure to get more done with less effort.

If you have bad knees or a weak hip, Pilates is perfect for you since this workout is easy on your joints while still giving you a workout to be proud of. Anyone who is interested in a workout that can be done anywhere and is safe for all fitness levels should try Pilates.

If you are like many moms out there and are limited on resources and time, Pilates may just be the quick and effective workout option you have been looking for. Get this great workout at home! No need to put on lip-gloss or brush your hair to go to the gym — just pop in an exercise video and do the Pilates workout that’ll make you feel like a rock star.

The Latest Style Of Fitness Footwear Can Help To Increase Your Workout’s Efficiency

May 28th, 2010 -- Posted in Health and Fitness | No Comments »

There’s no shortage of different kinds of sports shoes to choose from - general trainers, tennis shoes, running shoes, squash shoes - there’s pretty much something suitable for everyone. Obviously it’s important to pick the right type in order to maximise your sporting enjoyment and also to reduce the risk of injury.

The most recent advance in sports footwear is shoes which actually increase the efficiency of your workout - or which provide you with a lower body workout simply by wearing them while you walk around normally. As a rule, these feature a specially designed sole – often with a curved shape - and use carefully selected materials in their manufacture.

Masai Barefoot Technology (MBT), Skechers Shape Ups and Fitflops are all examples of this new model of exercise footwear. They all claim to increase the duration for which the muscles of the lower body are engaged during normal walking - something which, it is said, will help to tone up the wearer’s leg and buttock muscles. Considering that the average person takes around 10,000 paces daily, you can imagine how even a small increase in lower body muscle activity while walking would have a positive result.

It’s frequently suggested that this design of footwear reproduces the feeling of walking barefoot on soft sand. If you’ve ever done this for any length of time then you’ll know that it fels more tiring than walking on a hard surface - so it does seem to make sense that this might help to boost the efficiency of your walking exercise routine. In addition to “making sense” intuitively, a number of scientific tests have been conducted which have demonstrated that such shoes can genuinely prolong muscle activity. Anecdotal user evidence also seems to confirm that the benefits are, for some users at least, real.

Reebok Easy Tones are the latest addition to the range of super efficient exercise shoes. These don’t feature a curved sole, unlike most of the other shoes in this category. They are designed to keep you ever so slightly off balance - which results in additional muscle activity as you subconsciously compensate to retain your balance. This imbalance theory is also used by Fitflops - by means of their superbly titled “microwobbleboard” technology - but Fitflops also use a curved sole.

As a rule, these shoes generally cost no more than standard exercise shoes and are available in a wide choice of styles and colors. Many of them don’t look anything like traditional exercise shoes but are styled more like ordinary boots, sandals and clogs. Whether you choose to use them as a means of boosting the efficiency of your exercise routine or if you prefer to wear them whilst walking around as normal, there’s almost certainly going to be a style to suit you. If you haven’t taken exercise for a while then it would probably be a good idea to break your new shoes in over time. Try wearing them for just a couple of hours a day, even if you’re just walking about normally. You can slowly increase the time you wear them for over a fortnight or so.

Reasons to Avoid Obesity

May 23rd, 2010 -- Posted in Diseases, Conditions and Treatments | No Comments »

Being fat can create a world of problems. Two-thirds of the U.S. population is now considered overweight.
The upside of obesity is the impact it has on the country financially. Television is littered with infomercials showing the greatest new way to lose weight and the internet has many sites similar to http://www.fatlossfactor.com that have a program that is tailored to the individuals needs and lifestyle.

In some ways, we are better off in this fat economy. Many people work in easier, better-paying jobs, which help pay for their big homes in the suburbs. We can go out to eat every time we choose to. Flat-panel plasma TVs hang over fireplaces, which can be lit using the same remote control for flipping channels. But the unintended consequence of these economic changes is that many of us have become fat. An efficient economy produces sluggish, inefficient bodies.

There is a lot of money being made, and to be made, in feeding both oversized stomachs and feeding those enterprises selling fixes for oversized stomachs. Companies profit by selling the things that add to the weight problem and then selling something to deal with the weight problem. The weight loss industry has even created a hit television show about weight loss call the Biggest Loser which in turn has built its reputation for helping on websites such as the biggest loser weight loss forum. Businesses realize the profits that are to be made and are grabbing for it.
The need to lose a few pounds will stay with us for a long time. Our lifestyles have made it hard to maintain a healthy weight. As an accounting statement, people gain weight if there is an increase in calories taken in or a decrease in calories expended.

A lot of jobs now require a person to sit behind a desk and type at a computer which is not good for using up stored energy. Prior to the 1950s, jobs often meant hard labor. We worked outside. There were no automobiles that could get us to our destination. We did not have to spend hours doing a six pack ab exercise program in order to work up a sweat and lose weight.

There is no need to walk anywhere even in malls where there are escalators and moving sidewalks. To get anywhere we need we hop in the car and go. We pay money every month for the privilege of lifting something heavy in a gym we have to drive to. Our daily workout is now part of a routine that we try to follow. Do we work out, or do we drive the kids to their soccer game, where we can sit and watch?

It is important to understand the need for people to be active. This disparity of energy in versus energy out has led to the fat around people’s midsections. We expend fewer calories and take more in. We will gain weight. Hence, the Fat Economy.

The overall long-term economic costs of obesity are many. Our healthcare has enable people to live longer despite being overweight, but eventually the cost will be too high to maintain. Also, research shows that while more women have entered the workforce, their wages sink if they are overweight.

Companies already fork out billions of dollars a year in sick time and insurance costs related to obesity illnesses The problems of obesity in the workplace include more sick days for some people and lower productivity by those people in addition to people dying at a younger age thus taking them out of the workplace. Businesses can not sustain their profitability under these conditions. There is more at stake than just the need to lose a few pounds if someone does not make this clear to everyone.

I know lots of people that want to know what is the best workout program for their exact body type and size. Not everybody is alike and each body reacts differently to working out in the gym. That’s why it’s critical for you to understand how your body works and what your goals are.

1.) Do cardio exercises prior to training and then do them again after you’re done.
2.) Do high reps and low amount of weight on your exercises.
3.) It is important that you can feel your muscles burning on each exercise.
4.) Put together a specific routine.

When you’re doing your reps, and you’re nearing the end, you should feel a nice tight burn. As an example, you’re doing an exercise with 15 reps. You should be really struggling just to lift the weight by the time you reach the 12th count. It’s likely that you’re not using a heavy enough weight if you’re not really struggling on the last few reps. You’ll be able to see the satisfying results if you manage to stick to the right workout routine.

As mentioned earlier, it is important to have a plan when it comes to weight loss. Every time you visit the gym, you should have a clear picture of what you are going to do. If you also do cardio (preferably something fun and outdoors) on the days when you’re not in the gym, this will ensure that you’ll take your weight loss workout to the next level and get the results you’ve always wanted. It is key to understand that changing your food alone isn’t going to help you lose belly fat. The key to any successful weight loss program is both diet and exercise. If you hate exercise, you aren’t alone but it is essential to losing and keeping off weight. Interval training is great for all fitness levels as a way to burn a large amount of calories in a short amount of time.

The training sessions usually last around 20 minutes each, but don’t be confused with the short time of the work out. When these exercises are done properly, they will allow you to burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time. Burning that amount of calories will help you not only lose weight, but become healthier, stronger and fitter over a period of time. In order to lose belly fat, combining a regular work out routine with healthy food choices will not only give you more energy, but it will also give your body the fuel that it needs to perform daily tasks.

Have you ever noticed that after you’ve finished a large meal that you feel the urge to take a nap not long afterwards? Chances are you’ve overloaded your body with more food than it knows what to do with, so you feel tired and sluggish. A great way to lose belly fat is to eat small portions at regular meals, and choose a healthy snack of around 100-150 calories in the mid-morning and mid-afternoon hours. This allows your body to stay satisfied, which can keep you from binging by feeling famished later in the day. Try avoiding processed sugars and simple carbohydrates. Neither of them serve a purpose to your body and they are loaded in empty calories. Instead, eat fruits and complex carbohydrates, both of which are loaded with vitamins, minerals and nutrients that your body needs.

Shedding the pounds once and for all takes hard work and commitment. You won’t wake up one morning with the perfect body, but in time you can lose weight and feel great. It’s important to commit to the diet and exercise program of your choice for the long term until you receive the results you desire. Eat foods rich in healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, fruits and vegetables to give your body the fuel it needs to burn calories and fat.
